The East Africa innovation ecosystem is fast-evolving and the ‘African Silicon Valley’ is becoming a reality in Kenya. At the same time, Assistive Technology (AT) is increasingly needed and scarce within the East African Community. Informed by an analysis of the regional context and potential for AT innovation in East Africa, a unique opportunity has been identified and partners had developed a programme to support the creation of a thriving AT Innovation Ecosystem in Kenya.

The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives will host a Policy Hackathon in partnership with GIZ Make IT in Africa Initiative. The policy hack will apply the Startup Nations Policy Hackathon framework which is designed to help the public sector, startup entrepreneurs and incumbents co-design solutions that will have higher chances of tackling the specific problems that have been identified once implemented. Seasoned, expert policymaker peers join policy hack teams to guide the process and provide feedback.
The aim of the event is to inclusively explore innovative ways to address some of today’s most pressing policy issues faced by both regulators and entrepreneurs, by ensuring the involvement of key stakeholders in the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem from the on-set.

The workshop introduces you to Lunette Menstrual Cup as a sustainable solution for menstrual health management. The cup is a friendly option for both one’s body, wallet and the environment. Come and brainstorm, how this innovation could be more effectively spread and applied in the Sub-Saharan environment, and how the MHM could be made easier for people who menstruate.
Get a Lunette Cup! At the end of the workshop you will also receive one for yourself. In return, the workshop leaders wish you to take part to a survey concerning the usage of the cup and attitudes towards menstrual health.
Health is one of the themes of this year's Nairobi Innovation Week, and thus, it challenges us to think what kind of innovations we need in order to obtain a healthier society in the future.

With the advent of mobile phone technology, new ideas have emerged to address issues of health and wellbeing using mobile phone applications. The UoN Health App branded RADA has been designed and developed by University of Nairobi students with technical assistance from UNESCO and The Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Alliance.
This mobile phone application has been developed with the aim of reaching out to all UoN students and later be scaled up to other institutions of higher learning. Content of the App has been consolidated by the students themselves with facilitation by partners including UNESCO, Centre for HIV Prevention and Research (CHIVPR), UoN Health Services, I Choose Life Africa (ICL-Africa), and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Alliance. Other strategic stakeholders engaged to ensure that content in the App is relevant and updated included National AIDS Control Programme (NASCOP), NACADA, Kenya AIDS NGO Consortium (KANCO), Fountain of Hope, JHPIEGO (John Hopkins University), Africa Population Health Research Centre (APHRC), KAVI-ICR, Ministry of Health-Reproductive health, UNFPA, ILO and NACC. With the support of the UoN Vice Chancellor, the App is hosted in a portal within the University of Nairobi website. It is envisaged that management of the same will be done by CHIVPR as the administrators.
The scope of the content in the App includes the following thematic areas:

In the framework of the Africa Innovation Leaders Programme (www.africainlead.net) we want to propose an event dedicated to the Leaders from Kenya, both first and second generation. The first generation of African innovation leaders, who already took two learning period in Italy about Innovation and Next Production Revolution, have developed a Project Work in the form of a Business Idea, and this event can be the chance to present their work to a national audience and to meet possible stakeholders interested in the potential outcomes of their project.
The second generation followed a set of MOOCs especially developed for this programme and are now participating to a nationwide contest in the form of a business idea challenge, the finalists will present their work and a winner will be announced by the first generation leaders and the programme management team who will be present as a delegation from Italy.
The expected outcome is to put in contact the leaders with the national industrial ecosystem and ensure sustainability to the programme leaving an heritage in the project work itself, giving it a chance to evolve from idea to implementation.
